Student Wins Engineering Scholarship and Poetry Award

June 2024 – Honours Pure and Applied Science student Andreea Calenciuc graduated from the College this spring with a unique combination of awards under her belt.

Andreea won both a $120,000 Schulich Leader Scholarship to study engineering at McGill University and the 1er prix in the Concours intercollégial de poésie, the Quebec-wide French-language poetry competition for CEGEP students.

Winning one of the most prestigious STEM awards in Canada while also taking home first-prize in a French language poetry competition is an impressive feat.

The Schulich Leader Scholarships are awarded every year to 100 prospective students enrolling in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math programs at 20 leading universities in Canada.

The scholarship will help Andreea further develop her software engineering skills, an interest she was able to explore through her involvement in extracurricular activities at the College.

Meanwhile, Andreea’s first-place poem, “La toile,” was the only work by a student from an English language college to be nominated for a prize at the Concours intercollégial de poésie. She says she enjoys the creative freedom of poetry, and credits Marianopolis French professor Alexandre Jutras for his insight and encouragement.

Andreea’s willingness to take on new challenges in such varied fields is a great source of pride for the College. We wish her much success in her studies, whether she’s writing code or poetry!
